Background: France has gone into mourning following the death of President Georges pompidou, but in Keeping with his wishes there'll be no state funeral.

The late french President was to be buried in a simple ceremony at his country home in the churchyard of the village of Orvilliers, ??? miles (50 kilometres) south-west of Paris. Prior to the burial there was to be a service at a small church near the Paris apartment where President Pompidou died on Tuesday night (2 April). The later President had expressed the wish that he should be Buried under a simple tombstone carrying only his name and the dates of his birth and death. A national service which will be attended by both French and foreign dignitaries will be held at Notre Dame cathedral on Saturday (4 April) which has been declared a day of National Mourning. Flags throughout France have been flying at half-mast since the announcement of President Pempidou's death.

Under the French Constitution, the President of the Senate, M. Alain Poher assumes the President's function until a new election is held. M. Poher was also President for a short time following the retirement of Charles de Gaulle in 1969. It's now likely that there will be several candidates for the post of President, since unlike de Gaulle, President Pompidou did not choose to endorse a successor.

Despite the reports of his ill-health in recent months, France was stunned by the sudden announcement of M. Pempidou's death. Within hours of the announcement, crowds lined the Quai de Bethune near the former President's private apartment overlooking the Seine. Early copies of newspapers sold out quickly as Frenchmen sought more details of their President's death. The reaction around the world was also one of shock with leaders of scores of nation sending their sympathy both to the French government and members of President Pompidou's family.

A full meeting of the French Cabinet will be held on Friday to discuss nominations for a successor for the presidency. Acting President Poher took up office following a meeting of the Constitutional Council which declared the office of president vacant.
