Background: With top Italian designers settling this year for the classic, elegant look, Princess Irene Galitzine proved no exception to the Roman trend. At the showing of her Autumn/Winter selection on Wednesday (19 July) she produced a range of garments that optimised the very essence of haute couture.
Italy's fashion houses are no longer striving to cater for the younger, volatile but erratic markets. In trying to do so in the past, they found they were not only losing the race...but also much of their regular clientele.
Princess Galitzine's collection typified what the sophisticated -- and very rich -- woman will be wearing in the colder months to come. Yet there's nothing particularly opulent about the materials she favoured -- evening skirts in Shetland knits, box-pleated grey flannel and shaggy camel hair.
Although there were big triangular Spanish-style shawls of mink fringed with silk to wear over the gowns of more modest fabrics. Nevertheless, the shawls wee economical -- they could be cut into a jacket for the wearer if she tired of the shawl idea.
Instead of the wind breakers most other Rome fashion houses are showing this year, Princess Galitzine offered a classic blouson jacket with or without sleeves, worn over trousers and a silk blouse.
