Background: Thousand of protestors took part in a torch-light demonstration is Oslo last night (Friday) against Norway joining the European Common Market.

The demonstration was part of intensive campaigns for and against Norway joining the community which is being resolved tomorrow (Sunday) and Monday, when Norwegians go to the poll in a refer ???dum.

Bad weather hampered plans by anti-marketeers in many Norwegian cities.

During the day, young people and students had been handing out pamphlets and lobbying voters in the streets.

Signs and placards were evident everywhere, as the campaigns grew to a climax.

About two-and-a-half million Norwegians are due to vote on whether Norway should join Denmark, Britain and Ireland as new members of the European Economic Community.

Although the referendum is officially advisory, the Norwegian Government, under Prime Minister Trygve Bratteli, is reported to have threatened to resign if there is a majority "no" vote.

Torch-light demonstration in other centres, however, were hampered by bad weather. the anti-marketeers had planned to light bonfires on mountain tops all over the country...a traditional warning signal from Viking times that the enemy was in the country. However, pro-marketeers claimed the act could brand them and friendly Western nations as traitors and enemies.
