SPORT: HORSE RACING & MOTORCYCLE RACING

Background: Equestrians can sit tall in the saddle - one hay munching, cat eating specimen has conquered the snarling, roaring power of a petrol-driven steed. A French horse has beaten a trials motorcycle in a hurdle race.

It happened in Barbizon, France, the smart region of the horsey set south of Paris. On Sunday (12 May) after some intense training, Cyrus, a sturdy but sleek jumper ridden by M. Roger Bost, lined up alongside the cracking Bultaco motorcycle of top French Trials rider M. Olivier de la Garoullaye.

At the "Off the both sped away towards the first obstacle. Cyrus took it in his stride. Garoullaye urged his Bultaco onto a ramp and, side by side animal and machine flew through the air for a safe landing. It was neck and handlebar all the way. Obstacle after obstacle the competitors raced in unison, but at each jump Cyrus had the edge.

There was never more than a yard (metre) in it with the lead changing back and north of the flat. Into the last fence and a valiant effort by Cyrus pushed him past the post first with the Bultaco a close but spluttering second.
