Background: A lonely widow, pregnant, and followed by three of her children, entered St. Patrick's Cathedral today among the thousands of mourners who filed past the casket of Senator Robert Kennedy in New York City.
She was Ethel Kennedy. She and three of the 10 Kennedy children sat quickly in a pew before the bier of her husband. Mrs. Kennedy and the children -- Robert, Jr., Kathleen, and Joseph -- rose slowly. Mrs. Kennedy led them past the casket. She reached out and touched it briefly. Then she walked on, followed by her children.
Robert Jr., 14, had earlier joined the honor guard around his father's casket. He stood clenching his fists and looking occasionally at the mourners passing by -- some weeping and some kissing the bier.
Senator Kennedy's body lay in state the whole day on Friday (June 7). He is scheduled to be buried in Arlington Memorial Cemetery in Washington, D.C. on Saturday.
