    Background: The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration unveiled a peculiar collection of pipes, wires and rocket engines which will be used to simulate lunar landings. The device, known as a Lunar Landing Research Vehicle, will be flown by all the U.S. Astronauts to prepare them for landings on the moon.

    The Lunar Landing Research Vehicle uses a rocket engine for power. Balancing on the exhaust from the rocket, the vehicle will be reach heights of up to four thousand feet. In performance, it is roughly like a helicopter, being capable of hovering and a limited amount of horizontal flight. Its control system and its response to control are almost exactly like those that astronauts will encounter flying the LEM, or Lunar Excursion Module. The LEM is the actual device that is to be landed on the moon.

    The Lunar Landing Research Vehicle will be taken to Edwards Air Force Base, California within the next week. Shortly thereafter the astronauts will begin flying it, practising the techniques they will need to land on the lunar surface.
