Background: The Israeli agriculture minister Ariel Sharon was stranded for several hours on Saturday (5 January) on the West Bank of the Jordan when hundreds of demonstrators blocked his route. The demonstrators were protesting against Jewish settlement in the area.

SYNOPSIS: The demonstration follows an Israeli cabinet decision in December last year to postpone the deadline for evacuation of a Jewish settlement on the occupied West Bank of the Jordan. The High Court had ruled that the Elon Moreh settlement occupied by members of the Gush Enunim ultra-nationalist movement, must be dismantled. The Israeli government decided on a delay of its withdrawal deadline, set for 3 January until an alternative site is completed in about five weeks.

The Agricultural Minister was visiting the village of Elon Moreh when members of the moderate Peace Now movement blocked the road leading to the hilltop site. Some demonstrators chained themselves together but they dispersed after the Defence Minister, Ezer Weizman agreed to meet their representatives.
