Background: Dr. Heinrich Luebke, West German Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, chosen as the Christian Democratic candidate in the forthcoming presidential election, was filmed by VISNEWS as he arrived and left the nomination meeting held at Dr. Adenauer's Palais Shaumburg residence, Bonn, June 15.
Little-known outside Bonn, Dr.Luebke, if elected, will take over from President Heuss on October 15. Dr. Adenauer, the original candidate, decided twelve days ago to continue as Chancellor.
Political observers, who had forecast a "walkover" for Dr. Adenauer, say Dr. Luebke's election is a "probable but not a forgone conclusion". Most dangerous rival to the COU bid for presidency is Herr Carlo Schmid, West Germany's best-known and most popular Socialist.
64-year-old Dr. Luebke has held his present post for five years, and was unanimously chosen as candidate in preference to Prof. Franz Boehm, a Christian Democratic deputy. Fifty-seven out of 64 party electoral commission members attended the nomination meeting, Dr. Luebke is believed to be Dr. Adenauer's personal choice. Like the Chancellor he is a Roman Catholic.
During World War II Dr. Luebke was jailed by Hitler for opposing the Nazi regime.
