TRANSCRIPT: SEQ 4: MAKARIOS: "I believe that to achieve a lasting peace is necessary but there should be a total withdrawal of all Israeli forces from the Arab territories occupied since 1907. With regard to Middle Eastern problems, I wish to say that we fully support the Arab cause and the struggle of the Palestinian people and the restoration of their nation rights. If the people of Cyprus -- Greek and Turkish Cypriots -- were left alone to sort their differences, to find an agreement, I am absolutely certain that they would be able to reach an agreement and to solve their differences. I would say that the problem of Cyprus has been complicated because of foreign interventions."

Background: At a news conference in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on wednesday (18 June) President Makarios of Cyprus confirmed that the Cypriot Government is prepared to adopt a firmly pro-Arab stand...in return for Arab help in solving the problems of Cyprus.
The statement came at the end of four days of talks between President Makarios and Egypt's president Anwar Sadat. The Cypriot leader's visit to Egypt formed part of the second leg of his tour of Arab states designed to gain support for an integrated Cypriot sate and an early end to the island's problems.
Egypt has promised continued support for the independence of Cyprus with Archbishop Makarios as its leader.
