    Background: KENYAN PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA ON THURSDAY PRESENTED DEGREES TO GRADUATING STUDENTS OF UNIVERSITY COLLEGE IN NAIROBI, KENYA. PRESIDENT KENYATTA WAS INTRODUCED TO THE GRADUATING STUDENTS BY THE COLLEGE PRINCIPAL, MR. PORTER.

    THE CEREMONY BEGAN WITH A PROCESSION OF ALL GRADUATES AND ACADEMIC STAFF, FOLLOWED BY DISTINGUISHED VISITORS.

    SEVERAL HUNDRED STUDENTS TOOK PART IN THE GRADUATION CEREMONY, MOST OF THEM RECEIVING BACHELOR OF ARTS, SCIENCE OR COMMERCE DEGREES. IN A SPEECH TO THE STUDENTS PRESIDENT KENYATTA CONGRATULATED THEM ON THE APPLICATION AND INITIATIVE THEY HAD SHOWN THROUGHOUT THEIR STUDIES, AND PRAISED THE WORK OF THE COLLEGE'S TEACHING STAFF.

    ACCOMPANYING PRESIDENT KENYATTA WERE KENYAN VICE PRESIDENT MR. MOI, AND THE KENYAN MINISTER FOR COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY, MR. KIBAKI.

    SINCE 1964 THE NUMBER OF GRADUATES FROM UNIVERSITY COLLEGE HAS INCREASED ABOUT 15 TIMES. IN 1964 18 MEN AND WOMEN GRADUATED IN VARIOUS FACULTIES; THIS YEAR THE TOTAL WAS 295.
