Background: Thousands of people thronged Maya Maya airport at Brazzaville on Tuesday (7 March) to welcome home the victorious Congolese football team.
The team flew in from Yaounde in Cameroun after winning Africa's most coveted football prize, the African Nations Soccer Cup.
AS the aircraft taxied towards the airport terminal the crowds broke through a police cordon and ran screaming and singing onto the airport runway. The enthusiasm of the crowd knew no bounds when the team captain appeared on the top of the plane bearing aloft the cherished cup.
Police efforts to control the crowd proved fruitless and in the confusion that followed 78 people were injured.
(The Congolese team won the African Cup by beating Mali in the final by three goals to two. The match was noteworthy because all three Congolese goals came in one seven-minute spell during the second-half.)
