Background: On November the 12th, Japanese yachtsman Kenichi Horie set out from Tannowa port, in southern Osaka prefecture, in an attempt to sail single-handed around the world.

Thousands of people and hundreds of small craft gathered at the port to see him off in his 20ft (6 metre) sloop Mermaid Two.

His first destination was the Hawaiian islands.

But two days out of port, the sloop hit trouble and Horie radioed back a message that he had a broken mast and needed help, which was sent.
