    Background: FIVE PEOPLE WERE KILLED, FIVE ARE MISSING AND FORTY SIX WERE INJURED WHEN THE JAPANESE TANKER 'KAIZO MARU' CAUGHT FIRE WHILE LOADING CRUDE OIL AT RAS-EL-KHAFJA, BETWEEN KUWAIT AND SAUDI ARABIA ON THURSDAY.

    THE 'KAIZO MARU' WAS TAKING HER CARGO AT THE JETTY OF THE ARAB OIL COMPANY OF JAPAN. THE FIRE SPREAD TO JETTY INSTALLATIONS AND ANOTHER TANKER, THE 'GOLAR FIRI', BERTHED NEARBY.

    THE TWO TANKERS WERE TOWED CLEAR WHILE STILL ABLAZE SO FIREFIGHTERS COULD QUENCH THE BLAZE AT THE JETTY. THE JETTY AND INSTALLATIONS WERE PARTLY DESTROYED.

    RESCUE TEAMS AND AMBULANCES RUSHED TO THE DOCK TO HELP THE INJURED. SHEIKH SAAD ALL ABULLA AL SALEM, ACTING PRIME MINISTER OF KUWAIT, FLEW TO THE AREA TO PERSONALLY SUPERVISE RESCUE OPERATIONS.

    FOUR OF THE DEAD AND THREE OF THE MISSING WERE JAPANESE SEAMEN. SIXTEEN OTHER JAPANESE CREW MEMBER WERE BADLY BURNED IN THE FIRE.

    AUTHORITIES IN KUWAIT HAVE BEGUN INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE.
