Background: SOME 3-HUNDRED TECHNICIANS AND RAILWAY EQUIPMENT FROM THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA HAVE ARRIVED IN DAR ES SALAAM HARBOUR, TANZANIA, ABOARD TWO CHINESE SHIPS. AFTER ARRIVING AT DAYBREAK ON SUNDAY, ONE OF THE CHINESE VESSELS, THE 'YAO HUA', DECORATED WITH QUOTATIONS FROM THE THOUGHTS OF CHAIRMAN MAO, LAY AT ANCHOR IN THE HARBOUR WHILE GROUPS OF TECHNICIANS WENT SIGHT-SEEING.

THE EQUIPMENT WHICH ARRIVED ON SUNDAY WAS THE FIRST CONSIGNMENT OF CHINESE EQUIPMENT FOR THE TANZANIA-ZAMBIA RAILWAY. THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA HAS OFFERED TANZANIA AND ZAMBIA A GBP115-MILLION STERLING LOAN FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE 1-THOUSAND MILE (1,800 KMS) LINE WHICH IS DUE TO BE COMPLETED IN THE MID 1970s.

IT IS MEANT TO REDUCE ZAMBIA'S DEPENDENCE ON RAIL OUTLETS TO THE SEA THROUGH RHODESIA.

WHILE THE 'YAO HUA' WAS CARRYING TECHNICIANS, THE SECOND VESSEL WAS REPORTED TO BE LOADED WITH 1,800 TONS OF WOODEN RAILWAY SLEEPERS.
