Background: Fifteen people are known to have died in the collapse of a 10-storey block of luxury flats in Barcelona early Monday (6 March) morning. And later in the day, firemen and rescue workers searched the rubble as earth-moving equipment began the task of clearing the area.

It's not known what caused the explosion which ripped through the four-year-old block but it was thought the blast had been touched off by a gas leak. And there's reportedly been speculation that a bomb may have caused the explosion. Six bombs are known to have been planted in the Barcelona area in the past ten days, four of them in government buildings. Damage in all cases was slight.

The explosion preceding the collapse shattered windows within a radius of 200 yards (metros) and caved in steel access doors to lift shafts in a building 100 yards (metros) away.

It's believed that some 50 people were in the building at the time of the explosion.
