Background: COMMONWEALTH SECURITY FORCES DEFENDING MALAYSIAN BORNEO AGAINST INDONESIAN INFILTRATION WILL SHORTLY BE JOINED BY NEW ZEALAND TROOPS. AN ADVANCE PARTY OF THE FIRST BATTALION, ROYAL NEW ZEALAND REGIMENT, LEFT SINGAPORE TODAY BY AIR FOR KUCHING, THE SARAWAK CAPITAL. THEY ARE FROM THE 28TH COMMONWEALTH FORCES BRIGADE BASED AT MALACCA, ON THE WEST COAST OF MALAYA. THE REST OF THE BATTALION ARE EXPECTED TO LEAVE BY SEA SHORTLY.

IT IS THE FIRST TIME NEW ZEALAND TROOPS ARE BEING SENT TO THE BORNEO STATES TO SERVE ALONG WITH THE BRITISH, AUSTRALIAN AND MALAYSIAN FORCES AGAINST INDONESIAN INFILTRATION.

IN OCTOBER LAST YEAR, THE BATTALION WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CAPTURE OF SEVERAL INDONESIAN PARATROOPERS AFTER A FIERCE BATTLE AT LABIS IN SOUTHERN MALAYA.
