Background: Police suspect arson in the fire which killed 45 people and injured 80 in Manila, Philippines on Wednesday (22 January). A man was seen loitering inside the four storey building shortly before it was gutted by fire.
Most of the dead were women workers at an American wig company. The others were girl students from a vocational school sharing the building in the suburb of Marikina. Firemen believe the blaze started in a second floor warehouse. The building had only one fire escape.
Many of the people inside the building escaped by leaping from windows or climbing down firemen's ladders.
The blaze was one of the worst in the Philippines for years.
