Background: The prime Minister of the South American Republic of Guyana, Mr. Forbes Burnham has been making a five-day official visit to Nigeria. He arrived in the capital, Lagos, with his family and several government ministers on Tuesday (11 September). The Nigerian leader, General Yakubu Gowon and his wife Victoria were at the airport to greet him, along with several other senior officials, including the Heads of the Armed Services.

Mr. Burnham led the former British colony to independence in 1966 as head of a coalition government. His talks with General Gowon will concern measures aimed at consolidating relations between Guyana and Nigeria. The two leaders will also discuss the progress made so far in arrangements for the World Black Arts Festival which will be held in 1975.

The festival arrangements are expected to form part of general discussions on cultural links between the two countries.
