    TRANSCRIPT:

SEQ. 2: CARTER: "This trip will not be limited in its scope. He will be discussing both political and economic and military matters. We've had a very thorough preparation for this with the members of the National Security Council yesterday morning and for the last couple of weeks Vice President Mondale and I have been preparing for this diplomatic venture. Vice President Mondale has my complete confidence. He is a personal representative of mine and I'm sure that his consultations with the leaders of these nations will make it much easier for our country to deal directly with them on sensitive matters in future. I'm going to miss him. I know I'll be looking forward to ten days from now when he returns with a good report and this is one of the best things, I think, that I could have possibly done, as a new President, to show the strength and purpose of our own nation and out commitment to carry out the obligations that we have a leader in the world community-so Fritz, good luck.

SEQ. 3: MONDALE: "President Carter supports the integration of Europe and a productive dialogue between the United States and the European community and with our NATO partners as well as European friends not in the community. We believe that the security of each of our nations and indeed the preservation of our democratic values rest upon a strong Atlantic alliance. We place great importance on cooperation and consultation with all of our friends and allies."

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

After Belgium and West Germany, Mr. Mondale will visit Italy, Britain and France before going on to Japan.
