Background: Dr.Kutchuk, leader of the 'Cyprus is Turkish' party, today stated that the Turks in Cyprus would not modify their demands for the partition of the country. He was emphatic in saying that the Turks would not spoil their case by resorting to violence and that the Mendares Government in Turkey was carefully looking after the interests of the Turkish Cypriots.

Dr. Kutchuk was speaking at a rally of his supporters in the Turkish quarter of Nicosia, centre of the Cyprus hotbed. Earlier in the day boy and girl students had trooped out of their schoolrooms and marched through the narrow streets and to Ataturk Square, where Kutchuk was carried shoulder high before making his speech.

Meanwhile on the Greek side of the business the discontent continues to simmer with the announcement by Governor Foot that passive resistance would be dealt with by firm measures. This announcement, on the eve of Archbishop Makarios' deportation from the island two years ago, accentuates the disappointment of the Greek community which was expressed by Bishop Anthimos who stated that the Government could only prove its willingness to discuss the settlement of the problem by repealing the emergency regulations and bringing back Makarios.

The EOKA terrorists have opened a new offensive against the left ring Greek Cypriots accusing them of unheroic actions during the -- determination for the island.
