Background: Israeli paratroopers were involved in a mass military exercise in the Sea of Galilee area yesterday(Monday). Transport aircraft escorted by jet fighters dropped the paratroops above the inland sea in an exercise to train the troops in water landings by parachute.
The jet fighters were present to protect to troops from any possible attack by Jordanian or Syrian forces who are stationed along the nearby border.
The manoeuvres came as Middle-East diplomats discussed the possibility of extending the three month ceasefire along the Suez Canal and the borders with Jordan. Both the Egyptian and Israeli Governments has announced readiness to extend the military standstill. But Israel has again accused Egypt of violations involving the replacement of missiles in the Suez area.
Despite the lack of open warfare along Israel's frontiers in recent months, military forces have been on constant alert in case of trouble. The Paratroops played a major part in the six-day war in 1967 -- and include women in their ranks. In recent years the paratroops have been carried into battle by helicopters -- but true to their name they keep fully prepared for more conventional paratroop actions. Paratroops enable the Israeli military to maintain a capability for long range actions if the volatile Middle-East situation again explodes into open warfare.
