Background: At least twenty two more people were killed on Friday (31 October) as heavy fighting erupted again in Beirut despite a ceasefire declared two days ago.

Two armoured cars of the Lebanese security forces were destroyed in a battle between left and right-wing gunmen in the city's southern suburbs. Security forces said the worst fighting was in the area where the predominately Christian Ain Al-Rummaneh district merged into the mainly Moslem Shiyah sector.

They said it appeared left-wing gunmen were trying to force their way into ain Al-Rummaneh. As the evening wore on heavy explosions could be heard near the centre of the city which had enjoyed a day of comparative peace under the latest ceasefire - the tenth in six weeks.

With tension mounting Prime Minister Rashid Karami broadcast over the state-run radio to announce yet another ceasefire - to come into effect at 9.30 Friday night (31 October).

He said all parties to the fighting, which has now claimed more than a thousand lives since the end of August, had given their word of honour to abide by the ceasefire.
