Background: The Department of Agriculture has declared war on grasshoppers in five western states.

The White House had turned down a request to declare Colorado and Kansas as disaster areas, but the President directed the Agriculture department to provide aid to farmers.

Dalhart, in the northwest part of the Texas Panhandle, is suffering the plague along with areas of Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. Farmers here at Dalhart call it the worst infestation in ten years. One estimate reports nine million acres covered with grasshoppers. Farmers say the hungry hordes can now down a huge wheat field in just one hour. The eggs that hatched this year's crop of hoppers were deposited last year. A count of 10 to the square yard is considered serious--but in this Texas field the count is 400 to the square yard. The agriculture department is sending in high-velocity mist-blowers to spray farmlands.

But some farmers figure spraying by plane is their only hope. They use a systematic poison called All-drin. A solution of two ounces of the poison to fifty five gallons of water spells death for the grasshoppers. These flying farmers use converted bombers--B-18s and navy dive bombers-- to spray as many as 10,000 acres in a day. With their wheels nearly touching the crops the spray covers a 400 feet wide swath...War on the grasshoppers.
