Background: After failing to score in their first two games of the season the London club Crystal Palace finally opened their First Division account this afternoon when they beat Newcastle 1-0. A 27th minute goal by Alan Birchenall put the home club ahead although the goal margin didn't match Palace's domination of the match, particularly in the first half.
Crystal Palace's two former Chelsea stars -- bought at a cost of GBP140,000 -- Birchenall and Bobby Tambling led the side in a fine display or positive and aggressive football.
A first minute free kick by Craig of Newcastle caught the Palace defence off-balance and Dyson raced through to head a yard wide. But the home team rode the early pressure comfortably and gained confidence as Birchenall proved his worth.
Shortly before half-time, after Birchenall had split the defence, Kember was just inches wide of the post with a low shot.
Following the interval both sides attacked but the defence were equal to their task. Palace came closest to scoring when Tambling weaved past two defenders and sent in a dynamic left foot shot but Newcastle keeper Ian McFaul made a flying save.
