Background: The United Nations Secretary-General, Dr. Kurt Waldheim, met Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad in Damascus on Monday (25 November) to try to persuade him to renew the mandate of the United Nations Observer Force in the Golan Heights.
The six-month mandate of the 1,220-man Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) along on the Golan Heights frontline with Israel, expires on Saturday (1 December).
Syria's Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister, Mr. Abdel-Halim Khaddam, was present at the meeting, which lasted for more than two hours. Dr. Waldheim had preliminary talks with Mr. Khaddam at the Foreign Ministry earlier in the day.
Dr. Waldheim said he and the Syrian leaders discussed all aspects of the Middle East problem including the future of the Observer Force. He described the talks as a constructive exchange of views, and said he expected the mandate to be renewed for another six months.
