Violent demonstrations have been going on for several days in the West Delhi residential area of Karol Bagh in India, as a result of the death of a seventeen-year-old girl a member of the "Untouchable" caste...

...The "Untouchable" girl is reported to have committed suicide after her high-caste Hindu headmistress rebuffed her by refusing to accept a food offering from the girl. The headmistress was arrested under the Untouchability Act which prohibits caste discrimination in any form. Her release on bail prompted the violent outbursts by residents of the area.

Police attempts to subdue the protestors with tear gas were met with further outbursts of stone throwing from the demonstrators.

An enquiry into the girl's death has been demanded by the Hindu Nationalist Jan Sangh Organisation. But, ruling Congress party officials say that the Nationalists are merely making political use of the controversy..... The people, however, sensitive to the issue of the "Untouchables," continued their protests in the streets.
