TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 3: MR. BENSON: "THE FOLLOWING POLICY STATEMENT WAS ISSUED BY THE MEETING OF THE HAMPSTEAD YOUTH CAMPAIGN FOR NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT AND THE HAMPSTEAD COMMITTEE OF 100 AND DELIVERED ON SUNDAY THE 31ST OF MAY. QUOTE: "HAVING CONSIDERED THE DECISION OF MR. BROOKE, M.P. FOR HAMPSTEAD, THAT MR. BERTRAM BENSON'S CONTINUED PRESENCE IN THE COUNTRY IS AGAINST THE PUBLIC INTEREST, IS ALARMED THAT THE HOME SECRETARY SHOULD HAVE THE POWER TO ORDER MR. BENSON TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY WITHOUT GIVING ANY REASON WHATSOEVER FOR THIS DECISION. IT FURTHER CONSIDERS THAT THE HOME SECRETARY'S DECISION MAY BE BASED ON RUMOURS WHICH HAVE NO BASES IN FACT AND ARE TOTALLY IRRELEVANT TO ANY INTERPRETATION OF THE PUBLIC INTEREST. FURTHERMORE IT DOES APPEAR ON A CLOSER REVIEW OF CORRESPONDENCE WITH THE HOME OFFICE THAT THE DECISION MAY BE BASED ON A MISINTERPRETATION OF MR. BENSON'S REQUEST FOR RENEWAL OF HIS PERMISSION TO REMAIN IN THIS COUNTRY FOR A FURTHER PERIOD OF ONE YEAR. AT NO TIME HAS MR. BENSON REQUESTED PERMANENT RESIDENCE IN THE UNITED KINGDOM. IN THE LIGHT OF THESE CONSIDERATIONS WE REQUEST THE HOME SECRETARY TO GRANT MR. BENSON AN INTERVIEW TO ENABLE HIM TO DISPELL ANY MISUNDERSTANDINGS ABOUT THE SITUATION, AND FURTHER REQUEST THAT AN OPPORTUNITY BE GIVEN TO MR. BENSON TO ANSWER ACCUSATIONS MADE AGAINST HIM BY PERSONS UNKNOWN. "AND THIS IS SIGNED FOR THE HAMPSTEAD YOUTH C.N.D. SECRETARY, AND THE HAMPSTEAD COMMITTEE OF THE 100 WITNESSES AND THE PRESS SECRETARY."
