Background: Police battled with Cambodia demonstrators outside the American Embassy in London today (Saturday) in a demonstration designed to correspond with the big march on Washington. Fighting broke out when the police refused to let a column of marchers, estimated at about 5,000 , onto the road which runs up to the embassy building.
The demonstrators refused to accept police attempts to shepherd them round the other side of Grosvenor Square, where the embassy is situated. They charged the police lines shouting slogans.
Police helmets went flying as the officers grabbed banners being wielded by the demonstrators as staves. Bottles and hammers were seen flying through the air.
Police made at least five arrests.
Windows were smashed in the Embassy and the nearby Indonesian embassy as the demonstration became more violent. The demonstrators broke into a number of groups as police forced a wedge between the bulk of them.
A number of people were injured.....including a policeman.
