LEAKEY: "We are extremely grateful to the President of Kenya Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and to his government for the actions that they have taken to preserve the wildlife. However we feel in the Wildlife Clubs, as has been demonstrated today, that more action can and should be taken. We are particularly concerned that those who are usually punished are those who poach in the field. Most of these poachers are sent there by the middle men. We feel that government machinery should be strengthened so that the real culprits - those who organise this dreadful trade - can be brought to book, and face the course of justice. We feel that public opinion is the primary battle to be fought in the years ahead. If the public, the people of Kenya, the Wunenchi, show that they want the wildlife protected and conserved for future generations. It shall be so.

LEAKEY: "We have over 7,500 signatures on this petition. Thank you very much Sir."



SHAKO: "I am extremely thrilled to see you giving the government your sincere support in its efforts to combat poaching and to preserve wildlife. Some of the club members have witnessed the horror of the result of poaching in Sabo Park. My Ministry is very much aware of the unscrupulous measures used by various individuals in their greed for money. I would like to assure you that the Kenya government is sparing no effort to fight poaching but the help and cooperation of Wunenchi is needed at all levels.

Background: Hundreds of Kenya n student in Nairobi demonstrated against poachers on Saturday (November 24).

Mr. Richard Leakey, son of the late scientist Louis Leekey, spoke to the demonstrators outside the Nairobi Natinal Museum. Mr. Leakey is Director of Kenya's Museums and national chairman of the country's wildlife clubs. Part of his speech appears on film. A transcript follows:
Kenyan customs authorities have revealed that in the first five months of this year nearly a million pounds worth of ivory was exported through the country, much of it illegally.

The Government reacted by banning elephant hunting altogether and instructing the Game Department, National Parks and Police to redouble their efforts to catch the poachers.

As well as elephants, the poachers kill leopards and cheetahs for their pelts. Many other animals are affected by the poachers activities.

The students demonstrated because their wildlife is one of the country's main tourist attractions, a national treasure and heritage which they feel must be preserved for future generations.

Mr. Leakey marched with the demonstrators to the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife where they presented a petition with 7,500 signatures backing the government's actions.

The Minister Mr. Juxton Shako assured the demonstrators their petition would reach the President.
