Background: The body of Guatemalan author and diplomat Miguel angel Asturias was lying in State inside L 'Eglise St Phillipe du Roule, Paris, France, on Tuesday (18 June). Senor Asturias died in Madrid, Spain, on 9 June - at the age of 75.
Senor Asturias - winner of the Noble Prize for Literature and the Lenin Peace Prize - devoted his life and his writing to the promotion of Left-wing causes in Latin America. Above all his writing reflected a constant concern for the poor and the weak, as he campaigned for greater justice and quality throughout the world.
Senor Asturias was Guatemala's Ambassador to France for four years. He resigned in 1970, giving s his reason, a desire to devote more time to writing. However, his resignation coincided with the election of the Right-wing Guatemalan President Carlos Arna Orosio, amid a bitter civil war.
The author-diplomat did not return home, and spent the rest of his life in Europe.
