Background: PRINCE PHILIP , THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH, ENDED HIS TWO-DAY VISIT TO SINGAPORE YESTERDAY (FRIDAY), WITH A GAME OF POLO. EARLIER, HIS HIGHNESS ATTENDED A SERIES OF FORMAL RECEPTIONS AND INSPECTION TOURS.

THE POLO CLUB, THE ONLY ONE IN SINGAPORE, WHICH IS USUALLY EMPTY OF SPECTATORS DURING A GAME, WAS EXCEPTIONALLY CROWDED YESTERDAY. POLICEMEN ALSO MINGLES WITH THE SPECTATORS -- PART OF THE SECURITY PRECAUTIONS TAKEN DURING THE PRINCE'S VISIT.

THE PRINCE'S TEAM -- THE OTHER THREE MEMBERS WERE ENGLISH RESIDENTS OF SINGAPORE -- DEFEATED A TEAM REPRESENTING THE SULTANS OF THE MALAYSIAN STATES OF JOHORE AND PAHANG BY SEVEN GOALS TO THREE AND A HALF. PRINCE PHILIP SCORED THE FOURTH GOAL FOR SINGAPORE, WHEN AFTER A LONG DRIVE UPFIELD HE SCRAMBLED THE BALL THROUGH THE POSTS.

AFTER THE GAME, PRINCE PHILIP SAT ON THE CLUBHOUSE STEPS, WHILE AN OFFICIAL THANKED HIM FOR ACCEPTING THE INVITATION TO PLAY. THE PRINCE WAS MADE AN HONORARY MEMBER OF THE POLO CLUB.

PUAN NOOR AISHAH, WIFE OF THE SINGAPORE HEAD OF STATE, GAVE AWAY THE PRIZES.

PRINCE PHILIP LEFT SINGAPORE A FEW HOURS LATER FOR A SIX-DAY VISIT TO AUSTRALIA, AT THE END OF WHICH HE WILL TOUR MALAYSIAN BORNEO.
