Background: AN ESTIMATED CROWD OF FIFTY THOUSAND PEOPLE BRAVED THE RAIN TO GIVE THE OLYMPIC FLAME AND ITS JAPANESE BEARERS A TUMULTUOUS WELCOME ON THEIR ARRIVAL BY AIR HONGKONG ON SEPTEMBER 4TH.

SEVEN OF HONGKONG'S OUTSTANDING ATHLETES RELAYED THE FLAME THROUGH GAILY BEDECKED STREETS LINED WITH THE EXCITED CROWDS. ALL ALONG THE ROUTE AND AT EACH TAKE-OVER POINT, CROWDS OF PEOPLE CLAPPED AND CHEERED THE RUNNERS.

AT THE KOWLOON PUBLIC PIER, A RUNNER CARRIED THE TORCH ACROSS THE HARBOUR IN A LAUNCH ESCORTED BY YACHTS. APPLAUSE AND THE THUNDER OF FIRECRACKERS GREETED THE LAUNCHED AS IT CAME ALONGSIDE QUEEN'S PIER. THE TORCH WAS THEN RELAYED TO THE CITY HALL, WHERE THE MAIN CEREMONY WAS HELD.

MORE PEOPLE PACKED EVERY AVAILABLE POINT AT THE CITY HALL AS THE TORCH WAS HANDED TO THE GOVERNOR OF HONGKONG, SIR DAVID TRENCH, WHO IN TURN IGNITED A SPECIALLY PREPARED RUN.

A CITY ROAD HAS BEEN RENAMED "OLYMPIC AVENUE" TO COMMEMORATE THE PASSAGE OF THE FLAME THROUGH HONGKONG ON ITS WAY FROM OLYMPIA TO TOKYO.
