Background: Leicester City scored its first victory in British first division soccer since early September on Saturday (November 10) when, in the face of powerful, opposition, it defeated Newcastle.
Leicester's captain, Keith Weller, scored the only goal of the game in the 34th minute, although commentators said Newcastle deserved an equaliser.
However, Leicester goal-keeper, Peter Shilton proved a major obstacle to Newcastle. He stopped a series of powerful shots from close to his goal.
Newcastle played a very steady and well organised game, suggesting they had prepared well for the match, but it proved insufficient against the strong Leicester defence.
SYNOPSIS: Leicester City scored its first win in British first division soccer on Saturday, when it narrowly defeated Newcastle 1 - NIL.
In a fast-moving game, Leicester fought against a powerful attack by Newcastle, which appeared well prepared for the game.
Some commentators said Newcastle deserved to score but generally, it was Leicester which made most of the breaks. Their efforts were rewarded when skipper Keith Weller scored in the thirty-fourth minute.
Weller had a second try for goal, when he capitalised on a free kick, but his shot went over the bar.
Although one goal behind, Newcastle put up a spirited attack from its own goal line, forcing Leicester down-field. Under intensive pressure, Leicester defender Gibb was forced to kick the ball into the crowd to halt the Newcastle attack.
The last twenty minutes were the most exciting of the game, with Leicester goal-keeper Peter Shilton successfully saving every goal attempt by the desperate Newcastle players.
