TRANSCRIPT SEQ 1: NKOMO: "I don't see why the conference should fail, if the people of Zimbabwe. because this is the only one thing that we want. We want an interim constitution, an interim government so that we will be able to draw out an independent constitution for Zimbabwe which has (indistinct) all the people of Zimbabwe. So any person who causes that conference to fail, that person will be refusing that equality, and we cannot compromise with ourselves, with our principles, so no compromise with the rights of the people of Zimbabwe. We cannot do it, we've no power to do it. It would be evil to do it."

REPORTER: "If I may ask a second question that the tour now being undertaken by Mr. Ivor Richard to various African countries is like to increase the chances of success of the conference."

NKOMO: "I suppose so, if it does emphasise the equality of the people of Zimbabwe to those people who have a hazy idea about whether the people of that country are equal or not equal. That's his job, that's Mr. Richard' job. There is no other problem in Zimbabwe. When people say there is a complex situation, they mean it is complex, it is complex in as far as the white man wants to dominate the black man. That is what has caused complexity."

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Mr. Nkomo arrived in Egypt on Wednesday (29 December) for talks with President Sadat and Egypt's Foreign Minister, Ismail Fahmi. Mr. Fahmi has since emphasised his country's full support for the nationalist movement in Rhodesia.
