Background: A MEMORIAL TO AN ESTIMATED 800,000 JEWS WHO PERISHED IN THE TREBLINKA CONCENTRATION CAMP DURING WORLD WAR TWO WAS UNVEILED IN TEL AVIV ON THURSDAY. THE CEREMONY IN TEL AVIV'S NAHLAT YITZHAK CEMETERY WAS ATTENDED BY SOME OF THE SURVIVORS OF TREBLINKA AND OTHER CONCENTRATION CAMPS.

FOLLOWING AUSCHWITZ, MORE JEWS PERISHED IN TREBLINKA THAN PROBABLY ANY OTHER CONCENTRATION CAMP SET UP BY THE GERMANS IN EASTERN EUROPE AND GERMANY. MOST OF THE VICTIMS CAME FROM THE WARSAW GHETTO AND OTHER POLISH GHETTOES SET-UP DURING THE GERMAN OCCUPATION.

THE MEMORIAL DEPICTS THE BARBED WIRE PATH LEADING TO THE TREBLINKA CREMATORIUM AND THE CREMATORIUM HAS BEEN SYMBOLICALLY RECONSTRUCTED OUT OF 24 HUGE BASALT BLOCKS EACH WEIGHING BETWEEN 8 AND 10 TONS. THE DOOR OF THE CREMATORIUM IS A BRONZE PLAQUE BEARING AN INSCRIPTION TO THE JEWS WHO DIED THERE.

BEFORE THE UNVEILING CEREMONY, RABBI FRANKEL WHO BROUGHT THE ASHES OF THOSE WHO DIED IN THE CAMP SPOKE TO THE CROWD - MANY OF WHOM WEPT AS HE DELIVERED HIS ADDRESS. THE ASHES HE BROUGHT TO ISRAEL HAVE BEEN REBURIED UNDER THE MEMORIAL.

MR. LEVI ESHKOL, THE PRIME MINISTER OF ISRAEL, UNVEILED THE COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUE WHICH WAS A SIGNAL FOR THE ETERNAL FLAME TO BE KINDLED - POINTED REMINDER TO THOSE WHO PERISHED IN THE CREMATORIUM OF TREBLINKA.
