Background: While United Nations observation groups carry out extensive investigation regarding the Lebanon Government's charges of massive interference in the country's affairs by the United Arab Republic, British troops, paratroops and commandos flood into Cyprus, on the pretext of assisting with the security arrangements on the island. Observers are more inclined to believe that Cyprus is being used as a jumping off base, should the troubles in the Lebanon warrant British-American-French intervention.

Major-Gen.Bull--a Norwegian, Lt.Col.Maurice Brown and other UN officers are conducting a series of inspections in Lebanon and on the borders, in an attempt to build up a picture untainted by propaganda. Their chief, Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld--the General Secretary of the UNO) --- is due in the country shortly. Again political observers speculate; they think that he might be trying to anticipate intervention by the 'big three' (France, Britain and the USA.). Whatever his true purpose, the presence of UN investigation teams and world limelight have in no way eased the situation. Rebels recently wrecked the house of Mr. Sami el-Solh, the Lebanese Premier and attacked the residence of President Chamoun.

The corruption and insecurity of the Chamoun regime is blamed for the disturbances by Middle East countries. Machinations and the like have robbed the parliamentary opposition of any effective influence and forced them to express their grievances in a more violent manner. Accusations of pro-Nassor sympathies are vehemently denied by the rebels and the stories of giant-size pictures of the Arab leader hanging in the streets are also unfounded in the main. Some photographs did and are appearing but not on the scale earlier reported.
