SYNOPSIS: After months of negotiating, the world famous Chinese Acrobatic Theatre from Shanghai has arrived in the United Kingdom for a concert performance season, and on Wednesday, began rehearsals at the London Coliseum.
It's the first time in twenty years that a theatrical company from the People's Republic of China has performed in Britain, and it's seen as a major breakthrough in cultural relations. It could lead to visits from other groups of performers.
Many of the dances and acts date back to the days of Ancient China, and their presentation in London is apparently close to the original. But the orchestra, the brilliant costumes, and the pure artistry of the performers has turned the tradition into a West End spectacle.
The show is simple in its presentation with a backdrop of clear blue skies - perhaps meant to symbolise the optimism of the people from the People's Republic.
'Flying Swallows on Fixed Perches' is name for a multiple plate-spinning act. Like all the acts, it's meant to indicate collective wisdom and the strength of unity.
Most of the acts have poetic and unusually descriptive titles, which emphasise the extent to which acrobatics is thought of as an art form.. The girls - like this one excel in feats which require deftness and dexterity. The seventy members of the troops will be performing in London until the 14th of July.
