    S/V Mr Steyn being interviewed
    104 ft

TRANSCRIPT: REPORTER: Mr Steyn, you said that unless coloured pupils return to school this week the government will consider closing the schools - isn't this a rather drastic step? Why do you think its necessary?

STEYN: It is a rather drastic step, but it is necessary because what the agitators are doing to the children, and the schools for which my department is responsible, is terribly drastic. They are undermining the discipline of these people, they are teaching them lawlessness, and they are depriving them, and that is most important, of opportunities to qualify themselves for the better life that we are all striving to achieve for the people of South Africa.....

REPORTER: What is actually being done to meet the published grievances of these peoples?

STEYN: Well you know, these grievances, as far as they exist, receive continuous attention. The government is determined to improve the quality of teaching for these young people because we want to improve the quality of their lives for the future.Great prospects are opening up for all the people of South Africa, and we want our young people to be equipped to avail themselves of those opportunities. But if you boycott schools, and stay away, and allow yourself to be activated by people with outside and ulterior motives, you destroy your own outlook for the future, and that is not the solution.
