Background: Two leaders with huge refugee problems, Greek Cypriot president Makarios and PALESTINE liberation Organisation Chairman Yasser Arafat, got together in Damascus yesterday (21 June) to discuss common aims.

President Makarios was visiting the Syrian capital at the end of the second stage of his Arab World tour, designed to rally support for the Greek-Cypriot cause.

Only a few days earlier, whilst in Egypt, the President had recognised the PLO as the sole representative of the Palestinian people.

Whilst in Damascus, the President declared that he felt the Middle East and Cyprus problems are interconnected. Lasting peace, he said, could only be achieved in the national rights of the Palestinians were fully restored.

SYNOPSIS: Two leaders with huge refugee problems, Greek-Cypriot President Makarios and Palestinian Liberation Organisation Chairman Yasser Arafat, met in Damascus on Saturday to discuss common aims. It happened as President Makarios ended his two-stage tour of the Arab World, designed to rally support for the Greek-Cypriot cause.

During talks, the two leaders were joined by the PLO's military chief, Zuheir Mohsen, and the Organisation's official spokesman, Abdel Abu Maizar. A few days earlier, President Makaries had officially recognised the PLO as the sole representative of the Palestinian people. He said he felt the Middle East and Cyprus problems were closely inter-connected and called for full recognition of Palestinian rights.
