    Background: WEST BERLIN AND VARIOUS

West Germany Chancellor Helmut Kohl on July 20 paid tribute to the Germans who died in the bomb plot attempt to overthrow Nazi leader Adolf Hitler in July 1944. The bomb attack was made at Hitler's eastern front headquarters, the 'Wolf's Lair' bunker complex, on July 20, 1944 by a small group of army officers determined to overthrow the Nazi regime and negotiate peace with the allies. The leading figure in the bomb plot was Count Claus Von Stauffenberg, an idealistic young staff officer who managed to enter a conference room at the bunker shortly before Hitler attended the daily military briefing. Von Stauffenberg placed a time-bomb in a briefcase on the floor only metres (yards) from where Hitler was seated before excusing himself and leaving the room. Moments later the bomb exploded and Von Stauffenberg, convinced that Hitler must be dead, contacted the other plotters in Berlin giving the signal for the elaborately planned takeover. But Hitler, protected from the full blast of the explosion by a thick table support, survived the attack and his S.S. and Gestapo agents rapidly rounded up bomb plot suspects while army units loyal to Hitler crushed the coup attempt in Berlin. Von Stauffenberg and most of his co-conspirators were executed within hours of the bomb attack, almost 5,000 more people were killed after a series of trials. Chancellor Kohl, speaking at the site of the former Air Ministry in Berlin where Von Stauffenberg was shot, said "today, 40 years on, we remember the Germans who paid with their lives for their courageous stand for human rights and freedom, for justice and truth." He was joined at the wreath-laying ceremony by relatives of many of those who were executed after the failure of the bomb plot, an episode that is regarded by many Germans as the most notable example of resistance to Hitler's regime of the Nazi era.
