Background: A public holiday, glorious sunshine and the promise of a summer day in a southern England seaside resort. but into town came rival gangs of hooligans and turned it into a day of violence. Holidaymakers fled from the beaches as the youths fought pitched battles. By tonight (Monday -- Whit Monday), 60 of them had been arrested.

This, briefly, was the story from the sussex town of Brighton. The local newspaper described today's events as 'the Battle of Brighton' which ruined the day for hundreds of people who had travelled down for a day at the seaside.

It was in the morning that the trouble started. On one side were youths known as 'Mods' signifying their modern outlook On the other side were the "rockers" leather-jacketed youths coming from a lower class.

The trouble began in the morning - a youth was thown into the sea by members of a rival gang. A small skirmish broke out, and a girlfriend of one of the gang members was injured and taken away by police, the incident brought more hooligans stampeding on to the beach -- and police reinforcements. Scuffled followed and so did the first of the arrests.

A break in the warfare came when the youths forgot their rivalry to see a woman brought ashore after being saved from nearly drowning. The youths and their girlfriends rushed forward to look. But the peace didn't last long, as the rival gangs resumed warfare with a bombardment of stones and other missiles. This brought even more hooligans on to the beach.

A break for lunch, and then it was on again as the youths ran amok near the pier with threatening charges at the other gang.

But as the hot sun sank lower, the rival gangs decided to call it a day and head for home, taking with them their girlfriends.

All told, 50 youths were arrested. And among the weapons confiscated by police: studded belts, an air-gun and a golf club. A violent climax to a holiday weekend of sunshine.
