Background: VISNEWS filmed, May 29, as thousands of Belgian Socialists demonstrated in Liege, Belgium, against "Economic Anarchy". They marched to the Place St. Lambert, in the city's centre, to hear speeches by leaders of the Socialists Party and the Belgian Workers' General Federation, who organized the rally.
Speakers called for a socialized Health Service, a planned economy and nationalization of the power industries.
Earlier this year there was a crisis in the coal industry. Striking miners clashed with armed police, Feb 23, as they protested against the closure of uneconomic pits.
At a meeting of the Council of Ministers and of the High Authority of the European Coal and Steel Community, a limited plan was accepted for ending the Belgian coal crisis. The High Authority promised financial aid for the rationalization of the Belgian Coal industry, May 14.
