Background: In Conakry on Sunday (16 May) President Sekou Toure made the opening address at a celebration marking the 24th anniversary of the Guinea Democratic Party (P.D.G.). A crowd estimated at 300,000 in the 28th of September Stadium listened as President Toure referred to preparations for a new attack against Guinea, with the complicity of certain African states and Portugal. He said that a purging of all elements in the service of imperialism must continue in order to dismantle all networks of subversion.
Delegations from the Chinese and Soviet Communist parties were in attendance, as well as Stokely Carmichael, a militant negro from the United States. The celebration was marked by a three hour march-past by the armed forces, students, the militia, workers, and artists. Although the ceremony was held on Sunday, the actual date of the Party's anniversary is 14 May.
