Background: Although the flypast of 16 Javelin jet fighters was cancelled because of the bad weather, the main ceremony of Trooping the Colour went on in the rain today in London, The Queen, on her official birthday, left Buckingham Palace on horseback - on "Imp" - and the rain fell steadily as she went towards Horse Guards Parade.

A War Office statement this afternoon gave an explanation why the Trooping went on, despite rain. It said: "The effect of postponing the parade would have been to disrupt the London traffic all day. It would have given certainty that the parade would take place in fine weather. The Coronation took place in the rain.

Questioned about possible damage to the hundreds of elaborate uniforms of the troops who marched and rode in the Trooping, the spokesman said: "If on inspection any slight stains are found on the uniforms, they will be sent to the dry cleaners."
