Background: Britain's Prince Charles arrived in Gibraltar on Friday (5 November) to join the destroyer HMS Norfolk for at least three months' training. The Prince, who is heir to the British Throne, has the naval rank of Sub-Lieutenant and has joined the vessel for operational experience. He was welcomed aboard the Norfolk by the Commanding Officer, Captain J.W.D. Cook, and Commander D.B. Bathurst.

The Spanish Government has complained to the British Embassy in Madrid about Prince Charles' going to Gibraltar. Britain does not accept Spain's claim to the colony, and the Spanish authorities have felt that the Prince's presence there, unnecessarily hurts national feelings. The British Navy has said that the guided missile destroyer Norfolk was in Gibraltar for purely operational reasons and that the Prince may just as easily have been required to join his first ship at any other port.
