Background: The leader of Israel's Opposition Labour Party, Shimon Peres, has issued an impassioned plea for party unit after being overwhelmingly elected to lead the opposition into next year's General Election. Mr Peres defeated his rival and former premier 2100 votes to 875 at the Labour Party National conference in Tel Aviv. The Party vote came after the special U.S. envoy (name) arrived in Israel for further negotiations on Palestinian autonomy. Mr Peres, a former defence minister, told a news conference that Israel's foreign policy under a Labour government would be based on strengthening relations with Egypt and appealing to Jordan to help solve the Palestinian problem.
