Background: Madame Fathia Nkrumah, wife of the late Ghanaian President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, arrived in Accra on Thursday (2 October), after a nine-year exile, to re-settle with her three children.
She will be housed temporarily at the residential wing of the Kwame Nkrumah Conference Centre in Accra until final arrangements are made for accommodating her and the children.
Madame Nkrumah and the children were flown to Cairo after Nkhrumah's overthrow in 1966. Madame Nkrumah decided to re-settle in Ghana after the National Redemption Council took a decision to honour her husband, Ghana's first President, regarded by many as the torch bearer of Africa's freedom and unity.
