Background: In the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon men's singles championships, the defending champion Bjorn Borg of Sweden met Rumanian Ilie Nastase in a repeat of the 1976 final.

In the other men's singles quarter-finals Vitas Gerulaitis of the United States beat Billy Martin (USA) 6-2, 8-9, 6-2, 6-2; John McEnroe (USA) beat Phil Dent (Australia) 6-4, 8-9, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4; and Jimmy Connors (USA) beat Byron Bertram (South Africa) 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

SYNOPSIS: Borg won last year's final in straight sets, and any chance Nastase had of reversing that result disappeared as he allowed himself to be distracted and upset by the smallest incidents. The match opened with a Nastase tantrum, when first he objected to a late call and then claimed one of his services and touched the top of the net.

The umpire, Mr Jeremy Shales, several times had to rule on decisions disputed by the temperamental Rumanian. With Nastase's mind on other things, Borg took only 16 minutes to win the first set, 6-0. Nastase won only seven points after the early incidents.

Nastase concentrated more in the second set, and led the Swede by four games to one a one stage.

However, Nastase's temper again showed itself after several disputed calls, and the umpire appeared ready to call of the game. Borg then fought back to win the second set, 8-6. Borg's powerful serving and heavily-spun ground strokes kept him in control of the match.

Nastase seemed to lose interest in the match in the third set and service breaks in the fifth and ninth games brought Borg victory. He won the third set, 6-3, to give him another straight sets win over Nastase at Wimbledon.

Nastase was reported to the Wimbledon organisers earlier in the tournament for bad behaviour during his second round match against Rhodesian Andrew Pattison.
