Background: The quiet Norwegian mountain resort of Lillehammer has become the scouting centre of the world this week as it hosts the 14th World Scouting Jamboree.

More than 17,000 scouts from 95 countries have gathered on a 300-acre (120 hectare) encampment on the shores of Lake Mjoeas -- Norway's Largest lake -- to make the site, named Nordjamb 75, the 24th largest town in Norway for the week-long celebrations.

Around 4,500 colourful tents have already been pitched at the camp ... and the forested mountain slopes behind Nordjamb 75 provide a perfect backdrop for many traditional scouting pastimes.

The Jamboree has been organised by scouting bodies in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland. Its motto is "Five fingers, one hand", symbolising the joint Nordic effort in staging the event and the establishment of direct links between scouts from all five world continents.

The festivities are due to open officially on Wednesday (30 July) with a special visit by King Olav. Lasting until 7 August, it will offer scouts obstacle courses, exercise in conservation, handicrafts training, and sports .. as well as the traditional campfire programmes.

The Jamboree will be followed by the 25th World Scouting Conference to be held in Copenhagen from August 8 to 15.

SYNOPSIS: The beautiful shores of Lake Mjoesa near Lillehammer in central Norway. The area's always very popular with tourist ... but this week, much of the lakeside has been taken over ... by scouts. For Lillehammer is hosting the Fourteenth World Scouting Jamboree. More than seventeen thousand scouts have come here to take part in the week-long festival, organised jointly by Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland.

Many of these Norwegian scouts have already played hosts to scouts visiting their homes before the Jamboree begins.

This Iranian contingent have travelled thousand of miles to take part in the festival. Scouts from some ninety-five countries throughout the world -- like Bahrain -- have come to Lillehammer to join with their scouting brothers in a series of traditional activities and pastimes.

The motto of the Jamboree is "Five fingers, one hand" ... symbolising not only the joint Nordic organisation ... but also the ties Between scouts from the five continents of the world. African scouts from Nigeria have pitched their tents in the camp -- called Nordjamb Seventy-Five -- alongside those of scouts from Japan ... symbolising the worldwide friendship of the scouting organisation.

The scouts have been arriving over the past few days in readiness for the Jamboree's official opening on Wednesday. Norway's King Olav will attend the inauguration ceremony. One of the largest contingents comes from the United States. They'll join with the other in various scouting and sporting exercises ... as well as the traditional campfire activities. The Jamboree will be followed by the Twenty-Fifth World Scouting Conference in Copenhagen.
