Background: Second part of this reel was filmed on a tour with President MIGUEL YDICORAS FUENTES to the pacific coast where he some new homes to the people of ESCUINTLA.

Under an Agreement of the United States of America and the Government of Guatemala (1956) over 2,000,000 Dollar were contributed jointly for the purpose of building houses (for sale) for lower income groups (between 60-125 dollar monthly) on the basic of the Aided Self-Help method. The future homeowners do a certain share of work himself. When the houses are finished the handed over by the government in a small ceremony to the new owners which will have to pay monthly 15 dollar during 20 years. This monthly payment will go into a special fund which will be used to built more houses. It is hoped that 1800 houses can be build in addition to those already under construction, thus bringing up the total of 2800 houses.

The next three reels were filmed at Chichicastenangos. Altitude 6,650 feet, situated 136 miles from the capital in the department of El Quiche. The natives of this village are called the "Mexecos" the Mays ruins of Eigan Tinisit are nearer. One of the towns main attraction is the colonial church built in 1540 by the Dominican order where the "Popol - Fuh", precious record of the Mayan synthology, was written shortly after the conquest in Quiche dialect. The Popol-Vuh also knows as the National Book of the Quiches is a classic description of the world, and is considered with justice, the only pre-Columbian bible of the Americans.

CHICHICASTENANGOS market is undoubtly the most colourful and important of Guatemala. The Dominican church of Santo Tomas is veritable Mecca for the continuous stream of very pious Indians.

Here on the steps of the 400 year-old church, Catholicism and Maya rituals are mixed into native rites. Piously, they send their prayers upward into the smoke of incense for the souls of all good man, who will intercede for them with the Almighty Spirit. Later they are going into the church and kneel in front of rows of lighted candles........bringing offerings of cypress twigs, flowers and corn...... (it is forbidden to make inside the church pictures)
